Chaulmogra oil is obtained from fresh ripe seeds of hydnocarpus species, has been widely used for medicines, skin and healthy hair. The oil derived from the seeds of several species, particularly from the genus hydnocarpus, belonging to the family flacourtiaceae is generally known as 'chaulmoogra oil'. Among the different hydnocarpus species, H. wightiana is the major source of chaulmogra oil and other important species are H.kurzii and H. anthelmintica.

Chaulmogra oil is a non-edible oil obtained from the seeds of chaulmogra tree that grows in wastelands. The fatty acid constituents of vegetable oils determine their properties. Presence of long-chain cyclic fatty acids like chaulmogric acid, hydnocarpic acid and gorlic acid distinguishes chaulmogra oil from other oils.
